Word Twister Words and Music by Bill Pere

The hot coals from the barbecue had warmed my baked potato
The radio said "watch out for a very strange tornado"
It said this twirling twister could make your tongue twist words
I lay there on my comfy cot and said "That's just absurd!"
The twister hit the barbecue, I jumped up when the coals burned through
there were were three hot coals...and three cot holes.
Have you heard mister, 'bout the word twister?
Wished it got my sister, but the twister missed her...

The morning looked quite sunny, the boy said "Picnic time!"
He grabbed a bowl of Jello, his favorite flavor...lime
He sat there in the shade with his pink and purple mug,
When up into the Jello crawled a slippery slimy slug
The twister hit, he dropped the bowl, he slipped and glugged the slug down whole
There was a limey slip...and a slimy lip. ---
Have you heard mister, 'bout the word twister?
Wished it got my sister, but the twister missed her...

A father and his daughter were out taking a walk
All that little girl would do was talk and talk and talk
Her father tried to tell her that a storm was on the way
She just said "Be quiet, Dad, I've got more things to say!"
The twister hit, the trees all shook, she landed in a in a muddy brook
There in the dirty water...was the wordy daughter ---
Have you heard mister, 'bout the word twister?
Wished it got my sister, but the twister missed her...

The tailor tried to sew a suit, the storm swirled round his eyes
He didn't care or give a hoot which wasn't very wise
He was looking for a spool of thread, one that just would fit
He just had found the one he needed when the twister hit
The twister spun around his house and spun the spool into his mouth
There was the fitting spool...and a spitting fool ---
Have you heard mister, 'bout the word twister?
Wished it got my sister, but the twister missed her...

Little Mister Cobblepot got his oven very hot
He was going to bake a blackbird pie, but the blackbird said "You're not!"
The bird flew round the kitchen, Mr. Cobblepot was itchin'
To get that squawking bird in hand, but he was an awkward little man
The twister dumped him in the hot pie crust; turned the blackbird's feathers into dust
There was a naked bird...and a baked nerd --
Have you heard mister, 'bout the word twister?
Wished it got my sister, but the twister missed her...

Pegasus words and music by Bill Pere
( from the children's musical "Pegasus" by Bill Pere )

Don't you know what's in the air?
Then why are you so scared?
He only wants to be your friend
I hear the message that he sends...

It's only Pegasus flying,
He's come to say Hi and he wants you to know
There's no need to be crying,
He's only trying to give us a show...
When he beats his wings against the sky
And the lightning flashes from his eyes,
He's only trying...to make you smile.

See the lonely shadow fly
Through the feather clouded sky
He'll cry his lonely raindrop tears
'Till your laughter fills his ears

It's only Pegasus flying,
He's come to say Hi and he wants you to know
There's no need to be crying,
He's only trying to give us a show...
When he beats his wings against the sky
And the lightning flashes from his eyes,
He's only trying...to make you smile.

Look! He's off into the night...
His saddle studded with starlight
His wings whip up the wind
In all the places that he's been

It's only Pegasus flying,
He's come to say Hi and he wants you to know
There's no need to be crying,
He's only trying to give us a show...
When he beats his wings against the sky
And the lightning flashes from his eyes,
He's only trying...to make you smile.

Celestial Symphony
words and music by Bill Pere
from the children's musical "Pegasus" by Bill Pere )

(Ahh.....come join our chorus!)
Come sing a song with the night sky
A celestial symphonic display
Whoever you are, you too can be a star
It doesn't matter if you can't play,
Just come and sing...

(Ahh.....come join our chorus!)
The planets spin through the night sky
Weaving the fabric of space
They shine as they fly, caressing the eye
With the beauty of Venus' face.
So come and sing..

(Ahh.....come join our chorus!)
Saturn shows off her engagement
As a comet tail showers her hair
Pegasus drinks from the dipper and thinks
"How cooling to quaff evening air"
So come and sing

(Ahh.....come join our chorus!)
The Pleides children are laughing
To the lilting of pale lunar light
The Milky Way scintillates and sends the song
To brighten up Neptune's cold night
And invite him to sing...

(Ahh.....come join our chorus!)
The reverie reaches crescendo
As the Jovian thunder is heard
Taurus' horns with their fanfare adorn
All the music, the joy and the words
We sing tonight...

(Ahh.....come join our chorus!)

Anyone Can Make Music Words and Music by Bill Pere
(from the Musical ""Life In the Pits"...the Orchestra War)

I had a voice like a frog, I couldn't sing a simple tune...
So I tried to learn an instrument, and started on bassoon
I tried my hand at all the winds and drums and brass and strings...
But I found that I was just all thumbs and couldn't play a thing
I didn't know what to do
Till I found that old Kazoo...

And now I can make music
Anyone can make music
All you have to do is want to (It's from the heart)
All you have to do is want to (Right from the start...)

They say that I can't play flying songs
Like they can on their soaring strings
But if given a chance to try
I know I could make people fly...

They say that I can't play dancing songs
Like they can on their lightfooted reeds
But if given the chance
I know I could make people dance...

They say that I can't play fanfare calls
Like they can on their shining brass
But if my song had a chance to ring
I know I'd make people feel like a king...

They say I can't play a rhythm groove
Like they can with the beat of their drum
But if given a chance, I could prove
That I could make people move...

And now I can make music
Anyone can make music
All you have to do is want to (It's from the heart)
All you have to do is want to (Right from the start...)

Homunculus Words and Music by Bill Pere

He comes shufflin’ down the street
The local kids stand on the corner, waiting for their treat
He’s big and he’s strong, He could break them in two If he only had the brains;
But they know that he’s too stupid, and they sing out their refrain....
As they say...

Hey there, Hey, Homunculus! You’re just a piece of junk to us!
Every muscle in your body is twice as big as it should be...
Hey there, Hey, Homunculus! You thought your joke was funny?
We thought it stunk! To us, you’re just a jerk; Your brain don’t work;
We don’t want you around...

Yeah, God made him big and strong.
But in his simple mind, hew often asked if God had done him wrong...
Everyone just laughed at him, cause he wasn’t very bright.
they told him he was worthless; Sometimes he thought that they were right...

He was just a brainless halfwit; Maybe even less than half.
He wondered if God gave him anything that was worth more than a laugh...
As they’d say...

Hey there, Hey, Homunculus! You’re just a piece of junk to us!
Every muscle in your body is twice as big as it should be...
Hey there, Hey, Homunculus! You thought your joke was funny?
We thought it stunk! To us, you’re just a jerk; Your brain don’t work;
We don’t want you around...

He was movin’ kind of slow as he was walkin’ ‘cross the street.
Someone said it took a long time for his brain to move his feet...
A little girl was on a bike nearby as the car came ‘round the turn
It had to swerve to miss him, they said “God, why won’t he learn?”

Well, no one can ever guess the ways that God will choose to teach...”
The little girl went flying, as they heard the car brake screech...
She landed safely in his arms; The car just had a dent;
The only reason that she cried was cause her bicycle was bent...

He took it in his iron grasp; The little girl gave out a gasp
As it straightened with a mighty tug; The little girl gave him a hug.
Then as gentle as can be, he placed her there upon his knee

She looked into his eyes This giant man, this gentle soul, she wondered why he cried
Standing on the corner, the local kids had come around
Their sticks and stones were sharply honed as he heard that same old sound

As they’s say...
Hey there, Hey, Homunculus! You’re just a piece of junk to us!
Every muscle in your body is twice as big as it should be...
Oh, it hurt, she could tell, but then the silence fell
As the little girl said “Stop that, all of you!
Don’t you people know that the heart is a muscle too?”

What Our Children Teach
Words and Music by Bill Pere

The ocean waves goodbye, the child walks into the sunset
He's carrying a bucket full of pebbles, shells, and sand
The twinkle in his eye, like the first star of the evening
The joy of simple pleasures, simple treasures in his hand...

A child is an ocean full of wonder, always sure
That God is glad to share what's on the beach
A wild kind of notion that the water's always pure
And to touch the sky, you only have to reach....
I wonder what this world would be
If we all learned what our children teach

The ocean waves are high, the child walks into the sunset
He's carrying a bucket full of pebbles, sand, and shells
He watches seagulls fly to the first star of the evening
They spread their sails, he hears the tales and stories each one tells...

A child is an ocean full of wonder, always sure
That God is glad to share what's on the beach
A wild kind of notion that the water's always pure
And to touch the sky, you only have to reach....
I wonder what this world would be
If we all learned what our children teach

Heart of the Storm
Words and Music by Bill Pere

The ship sails away in the sunset,
Like a mirage in the sand
Children stare at the horizon
Your loved ones take heart from the strength
In that last lingering squeeze of your hand

You're the thunder and lightning, you're the heart of the storm
Standing tall with pride and conviction
We'll keep you in our hearts, we'll keep the home fires warm
And pray to God above, keep you safe through the night,
As you fight to build a world that's filled with love...

Each day, we think of your faces
You know how much we wish you were home
Let our love be an oasis
Till the pathways of peace bring you back
We're with you, you're never alone

You're the thunder and lightning, you're the heart of the storm
Standing tall with pride and conviction
We'll keep you in our hearts, we'll keep the home fires warm
And pray to God above, keep you safe through the night,
As you fight to build a world that's filled with love...

We've read all your letters
We've been touched by the thoughts they reveal
The pride, the fears, the courage, the tears
The desert dunes, ever changing
Can't change the way that we feel

You're the thunder and lightning, you're the heart of the storm
Standing tall with pride and conviction
We'll keep you in our hearts, we'll keep the home fires warm
And pray to God above, keep you safe through the night,
As you fight to build a world that's filled with love...

Jack T. Tation
Words and Music by Bill Pere

Jack T. Tation gives out his invitation at school
Thirteenth birthday party, all the kids will come cause he’s cool...
A master of hyperbole, he builds himself up verbally
And everyone believes that it’s true
There’s a sad and empty space that he hides behind his face
He thinks the world would laugh if they knew...
Is he like you?

Mary Master has a life that’s a disaster they say
She didn’t get an invite; With a smile she says “It’s all right, it’s okay...”
Friday night alone, glad to be home on her own
She finds a lot of fun things to do...
She cooks and does some crafts and reads books that make her laugh
She invites the world to laugh with her too,
Is she like you?

Jack T. Tation is filled with desperation and tears
He finds the price is high to be a guy who’s so admired by his peers
This birthday party crowd is getting much too loud
This night has no soul, only style...
He’s tired of being alone, he goes over to the phone,
Calls Mary and they talk for awhile,
She’ll teach him how to smile....

Trivial John
Words and Music by Bill Pere

At five years old he'd counted all the blades of grass in his front yard
And he knew how many cookies could be baked from sixteen tons of lard
At sixteen years he could recite every "Star Trek" backwards
And he knew how many leaves there were on the birches in the backwoods
But he didn't know if there was a God...

Trivial John I wonder ,what makes you the way you are?
What makes you ponder why high is high and far is far?
I know it must be lonely living in the clouds
But have faith and in the end you'll find a friend

Throughout his years at college, no one ever talked with him too much
The only figures he'd ever touched were abstract math and lines and such
No girls would ever date him for they knew they couldn't talk about
The outer rings of Saturn or the latest ways of treating gout
And he didn't think that there was a God...

Trivial John I wonder ,what makes you the way you are?
What makes you ponder why high is high and far is far?
I know it must be lonely living in the clouds
But have faith and in the end you'll find a friend

One day he picked his eyes up from his book, he shook his head
He looked up to the skies, softly he said
"If you're really there, I come to you with outstretched hands.
Somehow, somewhere, let me find someone who understands..."

One day while he was reading, a young woman asked a strange request
She asked "Sir, can you tell me, how many stitches are there in your vest?
And How many leaves are on that tree? And what's the quartic root of three?
And what makes your heart beat? I hope the answer will be me..."

Trivial John I wonder ,what makes you the way you are?
What makes you ponder why high is high and far is far?
I know it must be lonely living in the clouds
But have faith and in the end you'll find a friend

Get Scienced, Get Smart words and music by Bill Pere

If you think you’re on a path with no reason and no rhyme
Cause science class and math are just a waste of time
There’s something you can do to make your classes one by one
Seem like something new and even turn to fun...

Get Scienced, Get Smart
Get self-reliance, Get a real headstart
It’s a great alliance, Start today
To walk with giants who found a way
To make this world a better place for me and you...

What happens to the food when you’ve eaten up a sandwich?
What controls your mood? How is algebra a language?
Is there life on other worlds? Why are babies twins or single?
When a guy looks at a pretty girl what causes him to tingle?

Why is Swiss cheese full of holes? Why is water wet?
How do they get rock and roll to live on a cassette?
If you travel fast as light can yesterday be now?
It’s fun to look for answers, and science shows us how....

Get Scienced, Get Smart
Get self-reliance, Get a real headstart
It’s a great alliance, Start today
To walk with giants who found a way
To make this world a better place for me and you..

Science shows you how to take a muzzle off your mind
To see that life’s a puzzle, and then it helps you find
A way to fit the pieces all together so you see
How the universe is interlocked and science is it’s key

Biology and chemistry and even mathematics
Can help you out in music and in art and in dramatics
Physics and geometry, computers and genetics
Can help you out in English or in dance or in athletics

Get Scienced, Get Smart
Get self-reliance, Get a real headstart
It’s a great alliance, Start today
To walk with giants who found a way
To make this world a better place for me and you...

The March of the Munchkin Mischief Makers
(from the "What's In a Name series, by Bill Pere)
Featuring the voices of Faith, Rebecca, and Joseph Cowan

You're hearing voices, but no words. You're hearing music , but no instruments. How? The voices of three people, Faith, Rebecca, and Joseph Cowan, were recorded into a computer. The computer allows each piece of the sound to be separated from the rest, like the "O" in "Joseph" or the long "A" in "Faith". The different parts of the names, said in the kids own voices, become new kinds of musical instruments which are then used to create a song. The bass sound in "March of the Munchkin Mischief Makers" is from the name "Joseph". The melody is from the "A" in Faith, and
the organ-like chords are from the "A" at the end of "Rebecca". The percussion sounds come from the last name "Cowan", and other effects heard throughout the song are from other pieces of the names. There are absolutely no other musical instruments of any kind used in this song except for the sounds from the names. The song was composed using a Macintosh computer.
Using computers to work with sound in this way is not new. Called "sampling" or digital sound, it is the same method that makes CD's, or that records messages on a telephone answering machine without using cassettes. Everything about a sound...how loud it is, how high or low, how long it plays, and what it sounds like (its shape) are all represented by numbers....and computers are great with moving numbers around very fast.
Another thing that computers can do is to take a melody and create a "mirror image", so that parts which go up now go down, and parts which go down now go up. It would be like having regular music written out in notes, and then putting a mirror through one of the lines or spaces on the staff, and then playing the reflection. The middle part of this song is a mirror image of the first part.
This is an example of
how math and computers can be used in art and music.

Give the Children a Tomorrow by Bill Pere and Les Julian

Children need so many helping hands
Lots of care to grow
These are things that we can give
For they shall reap the love we sow...

Give the children a tomorrow
Full of all that life can be
A chance to live and learn
A chance to live and love
A chance to live a life that’s free

Give the children a tomorrow
That they may see their dreams come true
A bit of our today to help them on their way
To give their children a tomorrow too.

God gives us many signs of hope
To help our human race
Shining high upon the list
Is a happy child’s smiling face

Give the children a tomorrow
Full of all that life can be
A chance to live and learn
A chance to live and love
A chance to live a life that’s free

Give the children a tomorrow
That they may see their dreams come true
A bit of our today to help them on their way
To give their children a tomorrow too.
Just as our parents gave tomorrow to me and you...
