You'll See a Much Brighter Day

You'll See a Much Brighter Day
songs for the spirit by Bill Pere

The Crib in the Creche  (A Prayer From Me)
words and music by Bill Pere

Their freezer is filled with a fine festive feast
While outside the church window I stare
This Christmas Eve chill is pushin' twenty below
My legs just can't carry me there...
Been an hour or two since I last felt my feet
I won't last this night if I don't get inside
Three days with nothing to eat, and I don't know how long
Since I swallowed my pride

I hear someone say they feel warmth in their soul,
Makes me think about the hole in my shoe
If I fall on my knees, the rips in my clothes
Let the winter wind weave its way through...
Freezing winds disorient me
I search through my mind to recall how to pray
God, give me a hand or a light to lead me along
Please help me find your way
(Westward leading, still  proceeding, Guide us to Thy perfect light)

Doesn't anybody care for me?
Isn't anybody there to see?
Isn't there an answer somewhere for a prayer from me?

I'm tired of wasting this life that I have
I pray for a new chance to live
I never thought much 'bout what angels did say
I'm told if I ask, you'll forgive
A swill from a bottle can't drown out my pain
Like the swell from that choir now drowns out my yell
I just can't compete with the sound of sopranos in song
On that high note Noel
(The First Noel, the Angels say, Noel , Noel, Noel, Noel...)

I see as they sing how their spirits just soar
But the spirits I've poured into me
Have made me so sore and so weak and so cold
That its opened my eyes wide to see
With my last ounce of strength I cast up a stone
But they can't hear the knock of the rock that I hurled
My arms are so weak and their voices just sing out so strong
About joy to the world
(Joy to the world,  the Lord has come...)

Doesn't anybody care for me?
Isn't anybody there to see?
Isn't there an answer somewhere for a prayer from me?

Through the haze on the glass I see someone pass by
But the silent night swallows my shout
I see plates piled with pastry and pies passed around
Just about then I pass out
God rest this lonely gentleman,
Let something ease this pain
If I am truly forsaken then please don't prolong
This final refrain
(Good tidings of comfort and joy...)

I dream Mother Mary is smiling at me,
Then the sights and the sounds start to mesh
I hear someone say how they found this poor soul
Collapsed on the crib in the creche...
Been an hour or two since I first felt the love
That you share with Your children, and they've shared with me
They've taken me in, made me feel like I belong
Now finally I see
(He who now will help the poor Shall himself find blessing)

Someone really cares for me.
Someone's always there to see.
You've given me an answer right here for a prayer from me.

doG (When a Child Says a Prayer)
words and music by Bill Pere

A child is born and as he grows he sees the world through different eyes
They call him dumb, his name is mud, he cannot read, he does not know why...
Words reverse and then reflip and pilfer shapes this loser cannot resolve
He has no friends but hopes for a life where love will evolve.

Coming home from school he feels a pull that draws him toward a side street
Dim amid the shadows stands a dog, a homeless stray
He gives a yell into the alley at the dog, as the words spill from his lips
They're both drawn onward, like two sister ships, a pull they just can't resist

Each life tells a tale, but who among us can say
Whose hand is directing this play?
Each scene is scripted with care,
When a child says a prayer...

They run the whole way home, he pets the dog as they bound upon his doorstep
He forgets how all the kids call him a fool, act so aloof, he's happy now.
A boy and a dog felt left out, and now each has a friend
But this story is only beginning, this play's not reached its end....

The dog runs down the hallway, gives a yawn, leads boy up to the bookcase;
The boy feels a warm tingle in his flesh, he takes a book from the shelf.
This syndrome that makes palindromes is something now he knows he must fight
He seeks a switch, a lever that will let him revel in light...

Each life tells a tale, but who among us can say
Whose hand is directing this play?
Each scene is scripted with care,
When a child says a prayer...

He opens up the book and for a long time, he does not emit a sound
He does not gape at the page, it has no gaps, he does not drown in words
He calls into the kitchen to his Mom, "Now I won, I understand!
Something's guiding my eyes on a path, like an invisible hand..."

His mother stops the cooking, drops the pots to see what it was he saw
Her child sits with his dog, his best pal, a book in his lap...
She keeps peeking at the page he is reading, to see if he is right..
It says "In the beginning, there was darkness, then there was light..."

Each life tells a tale, but who among us can say
Whose hand is directing this play?
Each scene is scripted with care,
When a child says a prayer...

Letters
words and music by Bill Pere

Mother dear,
I'm glad to hear that you're feeling well,
There's nothing new here to tell.
The falling leaves mark another year,
And my ragged sleeves have caught another tear
That Catherine's cried on my shoulder since her mother has gone
But we're really both fine and we're both gettin' along...

Dearest Son,
I know someone like you
Can do the job that you must do.
To raise a girl without a mother there
While you must also work to earn the fare
Is perhaps life's most demanding task,
But if you show her you love her, she'll grow to be all you could ask...

Catherine Dear,
Seems I just turned around;
Suddenly my little girl is college bound.
How was your first day?
How do you like being away from home?
Now I'm here all alone
I hope you'll write me a letter soon...

Father Dear,
Wipe your wrinkles away,
Everything's fine and I just want to say
Though I'm here on my own where you can't watch over me,
I'll never be alone because I'll never forget you love me...

Catherine Dear,
It's getting late, and tomorrow's the day you graduate.
I guess we both made it through with a little help from above
The school gave you the money, I just gave you the love
And though the stamp on this letter costs a few cents more
You're the only thing I've got that's really worth living' for, so I'll pay
.

Father Dear,
Wish I could be at your side;
I know how hard it must be for you since Grandma died.
I guess my job is okay...They have me doing little things.
I made a few mistakes but it's only my third day.
And you remember that boy that I wrote you about?
He called me last Thursday, he asked if I'd like to go out...

Dear Grandpa,
How are you today?
Momma told me to write but I don't know what to say...
I heard her talking to Dad before I went out to play,
She says she hopes I'll be like you some day...

Christmas Eve, Silent Night
words and music by Bill Pere

Maria packs her bag, wipes her tears on her sleeve
Turns her back, leaves the house, it’s Christmas Eve
Her father has passed out, her mother’s passed away
Christmas Eve, just a day

For this child, this small candle flame
Crying “Love me”
Finding only pain
Christmas Eve, silent night

Joey owns the street, the street owns his soul
Dealing drugs these last two years, since he was twelve years old
This icy Christmas Eve wind stings him like a knife
Cold and hard, like the life

Of this child, this small candle flame
Crying “Love me”
Finding only pain
Christmas Eve, silent night

Maria stands and waits by the old churchyard gate
Dark and empty, Joey meets her, asks her “Why so late?”
She looks into his face, those eyes that never smiled
Tells him “The time has come. This night I’m going to have our child”

Joey’s face turns pale as the moon, He starts to run
“I could never love a daughter, never love a son
I could never give what I have never known
All my life, all alone,

Just a child, a small candle flame
Crying ‘Love me’
Finding only pain”
Christmas Eve, silent night

He runs into the church, the air is still, not a sound
The stained glass faces stare at him from all around
The sanctuary’s silence seems to touch his mind
Something soft, something strong, something kind...

Maria takes his hand, she lies back on the pew
Her breath is coming fast, she knows what to do
These ghetto children can’t afford a doctor’s care
But they know someone’s there

For their child, this new candle flame
Crying ‘Love me’
And the stars proclaim
Christmas Eve....

Once a child had been born; A gift from above
To teach us to care, to teach us to love

Maria packs her bag, wipes her tear on her sleeve
Looks at Joey hold their child, it’s Christmas Eve
Two children come to know that love is not a lie
Lift their heads to the sky,

Thank the Child,  that bright candle flame
Who says “I love you
When you know my name”
Christmas Eve, holy night

Christmas Eve on the Poor Side of Town
words and music by Bill Pere

The tangle of the tinsel on the tiny Christmas tree
Somehow doesn't look quite like an angel's hair
The single stranded teardrop tracked across her tiny cheek
Splattered on the tattered dress she has to wear...

It's Christmas Eve on the poor side of town
Where tears are tears of joy, the tattered dress, a gown
There's never enough money, but there's love to go around...
No fancy toys, no designer jeans,
In their heart they know what Christmas really means

The woman waits and worries wondering how to tell her child
That Santa won't be stopping here tonight
Before she speaks, her daughter looks into her eyes and smiles
And says "I know you love me Mother, it's all right..."

It's Christmas Eve on the poor side of town
Where crumbling plaster walls can't keep good people down
There's never enough money, but there's love to go around...
They see the bright star in the night sky and they know,
They got their gift two thousand years ago

When People Care
words and music by Bill Pere

Every morning, Every night
There's a song of wonder, the singing of birds in flight
Over, under, right into your heart,
A roll of thunder filling the air
It's the sound of hope you hear when people care...

See the sunset, sunrise with the dawn
A flash of lightning, open your eyes, it's gone
Starlight brightening, sparkling in the sky,
Rainbows shining everywhere,
It's the light of hope you see when people care...

When you see someone cry, ask them why
Lend a hand and understand
With a smile upon your face
You'll make this world a better place

Feel the raindrop falling from the storm
The cool of autumn, sunlight of spring is warm
When you've caught them, petals in your hand
Wind has brought them, ready to share,
It's the warmth of hope you feel when people care...

When you see someone cry, ask them why
Lend a hand and understand
With a smile upon your face
You'll make this world a better place

Veil of darkness, silence in your soul,
You can clear it, you can feel light and whole
Feel the spirit, soaring ever high
See it, hear it,. feel it in prayer,
It's God's own love you know when people care...

There's Wonder In the Way
words and music by Bill Pere

Every star has a place in Heaven,
Every person has a purpose here on earth
But as the bitter winds of winter
Are needed for the springtime's green rebirth,
It's sometimes hard to see just what a person's worth...

There's wonder in the way God wove the world together
The ties that bind are there for all to see
A place for every fur and fin and feather
Showing us the secrets of how to live together in harmony

The way the chilling frosts of Autumn
Change the summer's green leaves into gold
The way the giants of the forest
Protect the tender young trees from the cold
Shows the beauty and the wisdom of the old..

There's wonder in the way God wove the world together
The ties that bind are there for all to see
A place for every fur and fin and feather
Showing us the secrets of how to live together in harmony

In times of desperation
When it sometimes seems there's no place to confide
The cycles of the seasons,
The timeless turning of the tide
Shows the balance that His guiding hands provide

There's wonder in the way God wove the world together
The ties that bind are there for all to see
A place for every fur and fin and feather
Showing us the secrets of how to live together in harmony

Hands spin round the clock dial
The Earth and moon and stars all spin in space
Paths of people's lives are crossing
The lines of joy and sadness cross their face
But nothing's really ever out of place

There's wonder in the way God wove the world together
The ties that bind are there for all to see
A place for every fur and fin and feather
Showing us the secrets of how to live together in harmony

Song Of Love
words and music by Bill Pere

The sunlight wraps the morning dew in gold
Reflections of a thousand dreams, waiting to unfold
And the woodlands wake and surround you with sound
Making sure that you are told...

There's a song of love all around you
As God sheds His light on the day
As each new day dawns, His hand's on your shoulder
Let His love in, let His love show you the way...

As you stand before the door of things unknown
And wait to take that first step on a path you've not been shown
You can close your eyes and look to the skies
You know you're not alone...

There's a song of love all around you
As God sheds His light on the day
As each new day dawns, His hand's on your shoulder
Let His love in, let His love show you the way...

The dusty glow of twilight takes your hand
As the smiling sun completes it's trek across the land
And the moonlight leads you safe through the night
Making sure you understand...

There's a song of love all around you
As God sheds His light on the day
As each new day dawns, His hand's on your shoulder
Let His love in, let His love show you the way...

You hear the singing ringing in your ears
With a vibrancy and gentleness that melt away your fears
And His song of love will shine from above
For a hundred million years...

There's a song of love all around you
As God sheds His light on the day
As each new day dawns, His hand's on your shoulder
Let His love in, let His love show you the way...

Inherit The Earth
words and music by Bill Pere

Sunlight shines on my face, I feel your hand, O Lord
Moon glow lights up this place, the feeling's grand, O Lord
Raindrops falling from space to feed the land, O Lord
This world spins by your grace, I understand, O Lord

Worlds spin through creation and birth
Children shall Inherit The Earth
Help us leave a legacy worth what they deserve...

Morning light never fails, your love is bright, O Lord
Evening spreads out the veils that bring the night, O Lord
White clouds billow like sails, I watch their flight, O Lord
This world's delicate scales, I'll keep them right, O Lord

Worlds spin through creation and birth
Children shall Inherit The Earth
Help us leave a legacy worth what they deserve...

Birds sing in trees standing tall, a song you share, O Lord
Sea life, and creatures that crawl, now I'm aware, O Lord
All things, no matter how small, they're in my care, O Lord
Your love encompasses all, It's everywhere, O Lord

Worlds spin through creation and birth
Children shall Inherit The Earth
Help us leave a legacy worth what they deserve...

There, But For Your Grace, Go I
words and music by Bill Pere

Say a prayer for the man who looks to the Heavens
But sees only clouds in a gray, dusty sky
Each time I awake to a new day, I'm thankful
There But For Your Grace Go I...

Say a prayer for the child who's not known the laughter
Bless the tear that the loneliness wrings from his eye
Each time I awake to a new day, I'm thankful
There But For Your Grace Go I...

If you think joy in life
Is a pleasure that God hides
Look inside and you'll know where it resides

Say a prayer for the man who looks for the answers
But hears empty echoes of unanswered why's
Each time I awake to a new day, I'm thankful

(optional verse)
Say a prayer for the child who looks at the snowflake
Which melts and becomes just a tear in his eye
Each time I awake to a new day, I'm thankful
There But For Your Grace Go I...
There But For Your Grace Go I...
There But For Your Grace Go I...

You'll See a Much Brighter Day
words and music by Bill Pere

When you least expect them, all the colors of the spectrum
Pick the places all around you that you thought were lying fallow
And the flowers, fields, and clover show that God is watching over us all
Even when the rains come and you feel that lonely pain sometimes...

Sometimes, the gray clouds fill the skies
And rain reflects the teardrops in your eyes
But God made the rainfall to water the plants
So the flowers would grow and we'd all have a chance
To watch the flowers bloom and see
The colors wash the grayness away
And if you put your faith in His love
You'll see a much brighter day...

The yellow pale of moonglow on the wane as winter winds blow
And the silk and silver white clouds become gray and silent night shrouds
That obscure the Heaven's beacon and you find that you are seekin' something
Safe and sure when night comes you feel something isn't right sometimes...

Sometimes, we seek a guiding light
And find ourselves surrounded by the night
But God made the night so we could watch the sun rise
And see the pictures it's painting upon the morning skies
With rich vermilion reds and blues
That wash all the grayness away
And if you put your faith in His love
You'll see a much brighter day...

The color maze of rainbows and the maize gold of the corn rows
Fade to gray off in the distance, it seems just another instance
Of a road that's never ending cause it's always winding, bending
With directions that are wrong as you go wandering along the road...

The road seems long and hard at times
It seems that we can never make the climb
But God made the hill steep so it could lift us up high
And we can stand at the top and feel like we can fly
And look down at that verdant land
Washing the grayness away
And if you put your faith in His love
You'll see a much brighter day...
